When we were asked how very tall high cube shipping containers could be used as building blocks for a touring Disney castle, our engineers had many ideas.
THE CHALLENGE
Disney had contacted Balich Wonder Studio, a Milan-based live event and spectacle creator, to create a fairytale castle that could tour the world . Balich knew of TITAN’s experience in both shipping containers and events and asked if we could help.
They explained to us that their goal was to create a portable castle that would use shipping containers in two ways: to transport the castle from country to country and as the building blocks for the construction itself.
THE SOLUTION
What an impressive challenge! We looked at Balich’s designs and figured that 16 x 40-foot high cube shipping containers would be ideal to serve as the framework on which they could mount their stunning fairy-tale facade . Even our brand-new shipping containers aren’t exactly princess-worthy, but with clever design, we were able to ensure that no one would ever see them. Ticketed guests would arrive, see the completed structure—and have no idea about the industrial shipping containers it was built on .
Fitting the exterior into the shipping containers was no problem at all. The high cube containers are very tall, measuring 2.69 meters high on the inside , so there is plenty of space.
SURRENDER
Two of the containers delivered were standard high cube containers from TITAN’s stock, but 14 additional huge containers had to be modified by our specialist engineering team in Bristol. Over several weeks, they carried out structural reinforcement work to strengthen the top of each container. Their task also included extensive modifications to the exterior of the containers so that the Disney castle façade could be securely attached.
Once that was done, all 16 containers were transported to Greenwich, London, to be transformed into a stunning Disney attraction that could go on a world tour. Once Balich completed the final arrangements and approved the project, everything was loaded onto a ship bound for the Middle East .
THE RESULTS
The pictures, we believe, speak for themselves. They demonstrate in the best possible way how versatile containers can be – and also indicate the kind of projects our engineers can help with.
