Ireland has the highest incidence of cystic fibrosis (CF) in the world. This inherited disorder causes serious respiratory and digestive problems and affects more than 1,400 people in the country.
Those with CF need up to 19,000 pills each year to help them manage the condition and often report that their breathing feels like a life-and-death struggle.
Julian Benson, a choreographer, talent agent and former judge on RTÉ One’s Dancing with the Stars, has lived with CF since he was two years old . His charity, the Julian Benson CF Foundation, provides help to people with cystic fibrosis when they need it most.
The charity’s most ambitious project to date is set to come to fruition soon. Tranquility House, a 160-year-old Victorian house, will be converted into four apartments and provide a second home for families while their loved ones receive or recover from treatment at the city’s St Vincent’s University Hospital.
TITAN Impact is present to support the project from November 2023.
URGENT STORAGE CHALLENGE
With the cost of Tranquility House well in excess of one million euros , financial and other types of assistance from multiple sources were warmly welcomed.
One of the sponsors was the well-known furniture company DFS, which offered a host of household items that were essential for the new home and had been presented at the Ideal Home Show in Dublin .
However, this significant donation was at risk of being destroyed due to a lack of storage space during the building’s extensive renovation work.
When the TITAN Dublin team was alerted to the issue, TITAN Impact stepped in to offer unlimited use of one of our spacious 40ft storage containers for as long as the charity needed it.
This secure, waterproof unit has been keeping Tranquility House’s new furniture safe and dry since the day it was donated. Its precious cargo will be installed in the new home by the end of the year .
Tranquility House is Ireland’s first home to accommodate people with CF who are away from home and will help ensure that parents are never too far away during their children’s treatment.
WHY WE CHOSEN TO SUPPORT THIS PROJECT
When money is tight and every dollar counts, the difficult task of finding resources to pay for storage can seriously impact a charity’s ambitions.
With literally thousands of containers at our disposal, we were very happy to offer to help solve this problem, which would have long-term benefits for children with CF and their families .
CF is usually diagnosed by the age of two, meaning the impact on children and their families can be huge . A comfortable residential centre that supports Ireland’s CF community is something we are particularly pleased to support as a cause that is meaningful to us.
